Home // How Behaviour Support Works
Behaviour Support is not a one‑off assessment or a document that sits on a shelf. At YMT Care, it is an ongoing, collaborative process built around understanding the person, their environment, and the people who support them.
Every participant’s circumstances are different, so no two Behaviour Support journeys look exactly the same. Generally, the process involves getting to know the person, assessing behaviours of concern in context, developing practical strategies, supporting the people around them to put those strategies into practice, and reviewing progress over time.
Before any strategies are developed, YMT Care takes time to understand the person — not just the behaviour that prompted the referral. This means looking at the whole picture, including:
This foundation ensures that any strategies developed later are realistic, respectful, and relevant to the person’s actual life.
The process begins when a referral is submitted. YMT Care reviews the initial information provided and may speak with the participant, family, support coordinator, or referrer to understand the current situation. Acceptance into service and next steps depend on individual circumstances.
Information is gathered from relevant sources, including conversations with the participant and their support network, review of available documents, and observation where appropriate. Environmental, communication, social, and other factors are considered to build a clear picture of the behaviour and its possible function — what it may be communicating for the person.
Findings from the assessment inform the development of a Behaviour Support Plan. Strategies are shaped around the participant’s individual circumstances and may include proactive approaches, skill‑building strategies, and guidance for responding to behaviours of concern. Dignity, choice, and quality of life remain central, and where relevant, plans may support a reduction in reliance on restrictive practices.
A written plan alone is not enough to create change. Families, carers, support workers, and other team members often need guidance to understand and apply strategies in everyday situations. YMT Care supports clear, consistent implementation with practical recommendations designed for real‑world environments.
Behaviour Support continues after the plan is developed. Progress and implementation are monitored over time, and strategies may be adjusted as circumstances or support needs change. Feedback from the participant and their support network helps keep the plan relevant and workable.
A Functional Behaviour Assessment (FBA) helps build understanding of why a behaviour of concern is occurring. Depending on the situation, this may involve:
The focus is on identifying patterns and possible triggers, looking at what happens before and after a behaviour, and understanding what the behaviour may be communicating or achieving. The specific approach varies depending on the participant and their circumstances.
Behaviour Support works best as a shared effort. Wherever possible, participants are involved in decisions about their own support, and their voice is central throughout.
Families, carers, and support teams also play an important role. This may include:
Timeframes vary from person to person. Factors that may influence the process include:
YMT Care will keep you informed about progress and next steps throughout.
